What to Expect When Seeing a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP)
What is Family Dispute Resolution?
Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) is a mediation service that helps separating couples reach agreements about parenting arrangements and property matters without going to court. In Australia, you usually need to try FDR before applying for parenting orders.
Your First Session
Your FDRP will meet with you in a safe, private setting—either in person or online. The first session is about understanding your situation and explaining how the process works. You'll discuss what matters most to you and your children.
How FDR Sessions Work
Sessions are confidential and without judgment
Each person gets a chance to share their concerns and goals
Your FDRP stays neutral and doesn't take sides
You work together to find solutions that put your children first
Sessions typically last 1-2 hours
You can bring a support person if needed
What You'll Discuss
Common topics include parenting schedules, living arrangements, school decisions, holidays, and how you'll communicate as co-parents. The focus is always on what's best for your children.
Possible Outcomes
If you reach an agreement, your FDRP will help put it in writing. If you can't agree, you'll receive a Section 60I certificate, which you need to apply to the Family Court. Either way, FDR helps clarify issues and reduce conflict.
